Dawson on U23s Wigan victory

8 March 2022

Lead Professional Development Coach Andy Dawson has praised his team’s resilience as the Under-23s defeated Wigan Athletic 2-1 at the MKM Stadium.

Mallik Wilks netted a brace as the Tigers secured all three points in the Professional Development League.

On The Victory…

“First and foremost, I thought the lads showed great character. Credit to them because the Sheffield United result in our last game wasn’t to the high standards that we expect and that’s what we challenged them to do in this fixture. I thought we started the game well, although the game was a bit scrappy at first in terms of a few turnovers.

“Mallik scored a great goal and after that we pressed well and had real opportunities to hurt them. Late-on in the game for a 15/20 minute spell, they had possession and changed shape a little bit and they scored a equaliser, but the boys showed resilience. They had the abilities to change momentum in the game and score a really good goal to win them the game so credit to the boys.

Mallik Wilks Performance…

“Mallik showed a great attitude and work rate and that is credit to him. He also was an example to the younger boys and helped them throughout the game by talking to them. When he does things as a first-team member, the younger boys will look up to that and try and follow suit and he scored two good goals. But credit goes to the rest of the boys as well as they all showed a real attitude to try and do the right thing with and without the ball.

Colchester United U23s Preview…

“It was an opportunity for the boys to play at the MKM Stadium and perform to a high standard which I thought they did and they have another opportunity on Friday against Colchester United. I’m sure the boys will be full of confidence and it will be a challenge to see if they can match or better the performance from what they have done from this result.”
