Ingram reflects on defeat to Huddersfield

4 April 2022

Goalkeeper Matt Ingram felt the team deserved more after falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat against play-off chasing Huddersfield Town with 10 men.

Harry Toffolo’s goal with just over 10 minutes of normal time remaining was enough to secure all three points for the Terriers, after Tom Eaves was sent off in first-half stoppage time for a second bookable offence.

“I think the lads deserved a point,” said Ingram.

“We knew it was going to be difficult - it always is with 10 men. We thought we’d sit in and try and catch them on a counter-attack, and it’s just really disappointing to lose it on a set-piece.

“In the second half, we had a few chances towards the end where we could’ve levelled it up. I don’t think anyone would’ve begrudged us levelling it up.

“It’s very disappointing but the performance itself was very good from our side.”

The 28-year-old was voted as man of the match by supporters, and has been one of the standout performers for the Tigers since returning to the team at the end of February.

Ingram was forced to miss the home game against Barnsley after being knocked unconscious in the previous outing against Queens Park Rangers, but insists he has now fully recovered and is focused on keeping his place in the side.

“I just went out for about 30 seconds, and when you go out, all of the precautions are taken,” explained Ingram.

“I felt fine and I can remember the event. I just can’t remember those 30 seconds of my life. I’m absolutely fine and I think Harvey (Cartwright) stepped up and did really well.

“He’s been away with England (Under-20s) and now we’ve got Nathan (Baxter) back so competition for the number one shirt is hard.”

As the goalkeeper recovered from concussion in hospital, he was paid a surprise visit from owner Acun Ilıcalı, which Ingram felt was a nice touch.

“He came to see me,” added Ingram.

“I still need to thank him. He wasn’t allowed in to see me but he spoke to my wife and my dad. He was very nice and was everything you could want from the owner. It was a really nice touch him coming to hospital.”
