Hull City U18s 2-1 Crewe Alexandra U18s: Match Report

25 October 2021

A first-half brace from Billy Leach secured the Under-18s a 2-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra at Bishop Burton College.

Despite Zak Kempster-Down scoring for the visitors, the Tigers secured all three points in the Professional Development League.

John Anderson made two changes to his starting XI that were beaten by Wigan Athletic last time out. Harry Fisk started in goal as an overage player, while Rio Dyer featured up front as Ben Voase and Jaedyn Chibanga dropped to the bench.

Crewe had the first opportunities of the game as Henry Curtis blocked twice on the goalline to deny Kimi Kassanda, before the Tigers opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Sincere Hall’s pass found Leach, who drove into the box before rifling a right-footed effort into the top corner.

Ten minutes later and Leach scored his brace as Harry Wallis’ long pass released the forward through on goal, who in turn drilled his low shot into the bottom corner to double the Tigers’ lead.

The visitors pushed for a response as Matt Senior headed wide from a set-piece delivery, while Owen Lunt fired two chances off target. At the other end, Leach was denied his hat-trick following a good save by Tom Booth before Crewe pulled a goal back. Lunt found Rhys Allport on the left wing, who whipped a teasing cross for Kempster-Down to head in at the back post.

In the second half, Hall forced a good save from Booth while Alfie Taylor headed over from Wallis’ free-kick delivery. Booth then denied Leach once again with a great block, after good build-up play from Hall and Curtis, before the Crewe goalkeeper pushed Taylor’s header over the bar from the resulting corner.

Ty Webster thought he had scored an equaliser for Crewe but he headed wide from Allport’s cross, while substitute Pharrell Williams curled a first-time effort wide past the right-hand post.

The Tigers searched for a third goal late on as Chibanga and Hall both tested substitute goalkeeper Jack Flint from range, while Curtis drilled a low shot narrowly wide. In the other goal, Fisk distributed the ball quickly for Hall who ran the length of the pitch to create a shooting opportunity, but Flint blocked well with his feet to deny the forward.
