Hull City U23s 4-1 Ipswich Town U23s: Match Report

23 March 2021

A hat-trick from Ahmed Salam helped secure Hull City U23s a 4-1 victory against Ipswich Town U23s at the LNER Community Stadium. McCauley Snelgrove also netted as the Tigers secured all three points in the Professional Development league.

Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson made six changes to the starting XI that were involved in the goalless draw against Barnsley last time out. Three unnamed trialists started for the Tigers while there was returns for James Berry, Harry Lovick, Harry Wood and Matty Jacob respectively.

Both teams had opportunities within the opening minutes as Albie Armin denied Josh Hinds, while Jacob blocked Kai Brown’s effort. Berry then tested Bert White in the Ipswich goal with a dipping strike from range, before Salam curled a chance narrowly wide of the post.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Jacob’s low cross wasn’t cleared by the Ipswich defence, and the loose ball fell to Snelgrove who converted from close-range.

Ipswich tried to respond shortly after as Liam Gibbs forced a good save from David Robson at his near post, before the Tigers scored their second. A quick counter-attacking move saw Lovick square the ball for Salam, who placed his first-timed effort past the outstretched White.

In the second half, the visitors pushed for a goal as Colin Oppong saw his effort blocked by Jacob, before Tyreece Simpson saw his chipped effort saved well by the onrushing Robson.

The Tigers scored their third just past the hour mark as Salam won a penalty after he was fouled by Levi Andoh. Salam stepped up himself and sent White the wrong way to secure his brace and the Tigers’ third.

Immediately from the restart, Ipswich should have pulled one back as Zak Brown headed over from close-range, before Salam secured his hat-trick after firing his low shot into the bottom corner.

The visitors did get a goal late on as a low cross from the left wing was converted by a Hull trialist into his own net, but it was only a consolation as the Tigers secured all three points.
