It Was A Good Team Performance - Honeyman

10 March 2021

George Honeyman hailed a real team performance after helping Hull City to a 3-1 victory over promotion rivals Peterborough United on Tuesday night.

The two sides had gone into the game level on points at the top of the table, but a fourth successive win for the Tigers moved them three points clear of their hosts and Honeyman, who set up his side’s first goal of the night before winning a penalty for the third, was pleased with the night’s work.

“It was a good overall team performance and everybody contributed massively to that,” said Honeyman.

“Peterborough have some real attacking threat and we dealt with that well. The gaffer said our full backs would be key and they dealt with Peterborough’s threats well.

“It was obviously a big clash at the top of the table and we wanted to keep our winning run going. There aren’t many games left now and every win is valuable in terms of where we want to end up. It was a very professional performance. We enjoyed the win but it’s put to bed already as we have to be ready to go again for Saturday.”

Having fallen behind to Reece Brown’s eighth-minute opener, the Tigers hit back to level through a Reece of their own as defender Burke headed in from Honeyman’s free kick. United were then reduced to ten men shortly before half time with the visitors going on to capitalise with two early second half goals.

“It’s undeniable that the red card maybe made things a little easier and we capitalised well on it, but I thought we’d come back into the game really well anyway after riding a bit of an early storm,” added Honeyman.

“The lad gave the referee a decision to make having already been booked and I don’t think they can have too many complaints about it. We’ve capitalised on it early in the second half and put the game to bed which is very satisfying against a promotion rival.

“We said at half time that we just needed to remain calm and, if a goal didn’t come early in the second half, not to start panicking. Putting the foot on the gas in the way we did just made it a bit easier for us and it was a professional and really pleasing performance from us. We’re on a good run in terms of our goal-scoring away from home and long may that continue."
