Our Reaction Was Positive - Docherty

22 March 2021

Greg Docherty felt the way in which Hull City reacted to the setback of falling behind was a positive to take from the weekend’s 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury Town.

An unfortunate own goal from goalkeeper Matt Ingram, who saw a fine save from Nathanael Ogbeta’s free kick come back off the woodwork only to rebound against him and into the net, saw the Tigers go a goal down at the Montgomery Waters Meadow but they responded well with Docherty himself firing in an equaliser just after the hour mark.

“It was a bit of a sucker-punch to go behind, especially after Matty had made a great save to turn the ball onto the woodwork before it rebounded off him and into the net,” said Docherty.

“We reacted well, though, and that is crucial because you will have set-backs during this run-in. We reacted well and got an equaliser quite quickly. It dropped nicely for me on the edge of the box. My original effort was blocked but it came back to me and I saw a little gap. Thankfully it went in and I’ll take it. Overall it was a bit of a frustrating afternoon but we’re still heading towards where we want to be.”

Looking at the overall performance, Docherty admitted his side struggled to find any rhythm against a solid Shrewsbury outfit.

“We maybe lacked that little bit of a cutting edge on Saturday,” explained Docherty.

“The pitch was a bit dry and sticky and we couldn’t really get into a rhythm, but you also have to look at Shrewsbury because they are really strong defensively, especially at home. They’ve taken points from a few of the top sides in this league and are a very well drilled outfit. It’s never going to be a walk in the park in games like this.”

And reflecting on his fifth goal of the season, a 20-yard curler into the top corner against one of his former clubs, Docherty added:

“I was hoping I’d get a goal on my return to Shrewsbury and was just hoping for that chance.

“Thankfully one fell my way and it’s probably the best goal I’ve scored on that ground. I enjoyed my time there and managed to get some goals, so I do like playing at that stadium."
