Hull City U23’s 1-3 Birmingham City U23’s: Match Report

14 January 2021

Hull City U23’s suffered defeat in their first game of 2021, losing 3-1 against Birmingham City. Despite Josh Hinds scoring for the Tigers, a brace from Jayden Reid and a goal from Miguel Fernandez secured all three points for the visitors at Bishop Burton College.

Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson made six changes to their starting eleven that were defeated 1-0 against Barnsley last time out. David Robson, Brandon Fleming, Festus Arthur, Andy Smith, Billy Chadwick and Ahmed Salam all came out of the team for Harrison Foulkes, Louis Beckett, Jevon Mills, McCauley Snelgrove, Will Jarvis and a trialist respectively.

Birmingham created the first opportunities of the game as the Tigers’ trialist blocked Tate Campbell’s effort, before Kane Thompson-Sommers tested Foulkes from range. The visitors then took the lead on the 20th minute as Reid’s deflected shot found the bottom corner.

The Tigers tried to respond as Hinds forced Alfie Brookes into a good save, before Jarvis fired his first-timed effort over the bar, after Birmingham failed to clear their lines. At the other end, a long ball released Reid through on goal and despite rounding the onrushing Foulkes, the striker could only hit the side netting.

In the second half, the visitors doubled their lead just eight minutes after the restart. Foulkes produced a great save to deny Adan George, but the rebound fell to Reid who fired in from close-range. George nearly got on the scoresheet himself just six minutes later, but his chipped effort clipped the crossbar.

The Tigers pulled one back just past the hour mark as Hinds cut inside from the right wing, before curling his left-footed effort into the far corner. However, Birmingham restored their two goal lead ten minutes from time as Fernandez converted Reid’s low cross at the back post to condemn the Tigers to a defeat.
