Callum Jones Signs New Contract

6 January 2021

Young midfielder Callum Jones has signed a new contract until the summer of 2023, with a Club option of a further year.

The 19-year-old has made seven appearances for the Tigers since breaking into the first-team squad at the start of the season.

The emerging talent made his professional bow in the Papa John’s Trophy against Leicester City U21s in September, with his league debut coming four days later at Gillingham.

He converted a spot-kick in the shootout against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup and also started against West Ham United in the same competition.

Jones was handed the captain’s armband for the first time at senior level for the EFL Trophy tie at Harrogate, scoring his first career goal – a penalty – in a 2-0 win.

The Wales Under-19 international also featured in the Trophy victory over Grimsby, as well as the FA Cup tie at Stevenage.

“We see Callum as a big part of the Club moving forward,” said Head Coach Grant McCann.

“We like his versatility – the fact he can play in numerous positions in midfield. We’ve also seen him play at right-back but we see him predominantly as an attacking number eight.

“He’s got a really good mentality. He wants to work hard, he wants to get better every single day and he’s going to have a bright future here.

“We’re frustrated he picked up the injury (hamstring) when he did after the Stevenage game as I’m sure he would have had more appearances.

“He’s got people he can learn off in Greg Docherty, George Honeyman, Richie Smallwood, Regan Slater and Dan Batty, and hopefully he can push them to try to get in the team.”
