McCann Provides Update On Jones And Whyte

3 February 2021

Grant McCann provided a fitness update on Alfie Jones and Gavin Whyte following last night’s Papa John’s Trophy quarter-final against Lincoln City.

Jones was withdrawn in the second half of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Swindon Town, while Cardiff City loanee Whyte has missed the last two games.

McCann explained: “Alfie Jones is going to be out for 10 days or so. He might miss the next couple of games but it’s not too bad. It’s a hamstring injury but we’ll turn him around quickly.

“Gavin Whyte went over his ankle in training. Best case scenario for Gavin, maybe two and a half, three weeks. Worst case, maybe four weeks.

“That’s a blow for us because he’s been in tremendous form but I know the physios will work hard to turn him around quick as well.

“We’re actually pleased with that outcome because we were really worried when we saw it happen at the training ground.

“It’s actually the best outcome for us that it’s not as long as we first thought.”

Left-back Max Clark completed a return to his hometown club on transfer deadline day, and McCann says it shouldn’t be too long before he is ready for first-team action.

“Max hasn’t done much in training or games in the last four or five months,” McCann said.

“We’ll hope to get him up to speed quickly and he provides really good competition.

“He’s a top player. I feel as if I’ve got two of the best left-backs in the division, and two of the best right-backs in the division, so we’re very, very lucky.”

Asked if it might take him around a month to get up to speed, McCann responded: “Quicker – we haven’t got a month. The conditioning coaches know exactly about that.

“We haven’t got a month. He needs to be up to speed very quickly so he’ll be working hard to get there as quick as he can.”
