New loan signing Matt Smith says he is excited about the challenge of playing in the Championship in 2021/22.
Midfielder Smith has joined the Tigers on a season-long loan from Manchester City and, after playing 40 times in League One for Doncaster Rovers last season, the 21-year-old is looking forward to stepping up a level.
“I’m absolutely delighted to have signed,” said Smith.
“It’s taken a little longer to go through than most would have liked but I’m delighted to be in now and can’t wait to get on with the season. I’ve been speaking with the gaffer a lot and he’s been explaining about how he likes the team to play. That style of play is something that suits me, and we have such a good young squad here that also features some really experienced players, and I feel that I can learn and develop here and get better every day.
“It’s exciting for me to make the step up to the Championship after playing in League One last season and it’s a challenge that I’m looking forward to.”
Smith has spent the last few days training with his new team-mates and says he can feel the kind of camaraderie that played such a huge part in taking Grant McCann’s side to the League One title last term.
“As soon as you walk in here you can feel the momentum that the squad has got after last season and the camaraderie as well, and I’m looking forward to working alongside this group,” Smith continued.
“Training has been great and the lads are a top bunch who work hard and are very professional. I just want to play some games and be a part of it, and show everybody at Hull City what I can do. I can’t wait.
“I’m the type of player that will try and give everything I can to the team, and I like to get on the ball as much as I can. I’m comfortable deep in midfield, but also as more of a box to box player as well. I enjoy both of those roles."
