Matt Smith: The Story So Far

6 August 2021

An in-depth look at the career of the Tigers’ latest signing, Matt Smith…

Born in the Midlands, Matt Smith was initially on West Bromwich Albion’s books before joining Manchester City’s Academy at the age of 14.

Smith represented Manchester City’s Academy side in the EFL Trophy during the 2017/18 season and, having previously represented Wales at Under-17, 19 and 21 level, he made his first senior international appearance at the end of that campaign when coming off the bench in a 0-0 draw with Mexico.

The midfielder’s development continued apace the following season when he joined Dutch side FC Twente on a season-long loan, scoring twice in 34 appearances to help his side win promotion to the Eredivisie whilst also becoming more of a regular in the international set-up as he featured in Euro 2020 qualifiers and Nations League fixtures.

After returning to Manchester City, Smith’s 2019/20 campaign was split between loan spells at Queens Park Rangers and Charlton Athletic, making ten appearances for the R’s and then playing twice for the Addicks before the pandemic hit.

Smith made a further four appearances for Wales at the start of 2020/21 before joining Doncaster Rovers on loan in October. It proved to be a productive spell for the midfielder as he went on to play 43 times for Rovers before being included in the Wales squad for the delayed Euro 2020 tournament.

The 21-year-old will now be looking to make an impression with the Tigers as they return to the Championship in 2021/22.
