McCann: Best Performance of my Time in Charge

16 September 2020

Grant McCann hailed the “best performance” of his time in charge as Hull City overcame Leeds United on penalties to reach the Carabao Cup third round.

Mallik Wilks’ deflected fifth-minute strike looked to have won it for the Tigers, only for Ezgjan Alioski’s 93rd-minute effort to ensure normal time finished all square.

But McCann’s men held their nerve to win 9-8 on spot-kicks and will now travel to West Ham United in round three next Tuesday.

“It’s the best performance I’ve seen as the manager of the club," said McCann. "I told the boys that after the game.

“We can speak about the games at Fulham away or Forest away in the Championship. But tonight, in terms of a complete performance, that’s the best I’ve seen since I’ve been the manager of the football club.

“I’m really proud of the boys because they are fit and they can run; that’s going to be a key factor for us this year.

“We had so many chances. To come to Elland Road and have the chances we had tonight, I’m pleased. Leeds still had a strong team on the pitch, some big players who have done well for them and new signings.

“We’re really pleased with the whole performance. The team performance was outstanding from start to finish.”
