Hull City U23s 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday U23s: Match Report

28 September 2020

Hull City U23’s climbed to the top of the U23 Professional Development League with a 1-0 victory over ten-man Sheffield Wednesday.

Max Sheaf’s first-half strike was enough to secure all three points for the Tigers at the KCOM Stadium, as Korede Adedoyin was sent-off for a high foot.

Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson made seven changes to the starting eleven that defeated Wigan Athletic 3-0 last time out. George Long, Lewie Coyle, Brandon Fleming, Dan Batty, Sean McLoughlin, Callum Jones and Thomas Mayer all came into the side for David Robson, Matty Jacob, Jake Leake, Jordan Hickey, Festus Arthur, Ryan Hanson and McCauley Snelgrove respectively.

The Tigers created the majority of chances in the first-half. James Berry flashed a free-kick narrowly wide, before Mayer hit the post after the winger was played through by Batty.

Fleming then provided two great separate free-kick deliveries, but both Jacob Greaves and McLoughlin could only head their efforts wide. At the other end, Isaac Rice saw his shot blocked by Greaves, before Adedoyin dragged his low cross-shot wide.

The Tigers opened the scoring on the 35th minute as Coyle’s cross found it’s way to Sheaf at the back post and the midfielder fired his low shot into the bottom corner. City almost doubled their lead five minutes later as Sheaf picked out the run of Jones, but the midfielder saw his volley pushed over the bar by Joshua Render.

Charles Hagan thought he had equalised for the visitors, but he dragged his shot wide, while the Tigers could have doubled their lead before half-time. Sheaf won possession high up the pitch and played in Chadwick, who in-turn released Mayer through on goal, but the winger fired wide.

It was a tame opening in the second half as Berry tested Render with his free-kick, before Giovanni McGregor saw his effort blocked by Greaves. In the last twenty minutes, Berry wasted a great opportunity as he curled his attempt wide, before the visitors hit the post through Manuel Hidalgo.

The visitors were thankful for defender Isaac Rice as his sliding challenge denied Chadwick from close-range, while Berry dragged an attempt wide after cutting inside from the left wing. Rice was on hand once again to block the Tigers, denying Fleming’s low cross, while Greaves blocked Adedoyin’s effort.

In stoppage-time, Rice blocked Chadwick’s attempt, before the visitors were reduced to ten men. Adedoyin was shown a straight red card after a high foot on Greaves as the Tigers made it three wins from three.
