McCann hails Emmanuel impact

9 October 2020

Grant McCann has hailed the impact of right-back Josh Emmanuel since his arrival at Hull City.

The 23-year-old has started all four league games for the Tigers, catching the eye with his energetic displays down the right-hand side.

Emmanuel’s strong showings have kept Hull-born Lewie Coyle out of the team, meaning the 25-year-old may miss out on a reunion with former club Fleetwood tonight.

McCann has been pleased with the way Coyle has handled not being involved, and says he is pushing his teammate all the way.

But the boss can’t help but be impressed by Emmanuel, praising the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch.

“Josh is a top player,” said McCann. “Defensively, he’s really good and in one on ones, he’s very tough to get past. He gives us a real attacking threat because he wants to get forward.

“He reminds me of a full-back I played with years back at Peterborough, Mark Little, in terms of being very good defensively but also being very good going forward.

“The biggest thing about him is how grounded he is. He’s a really, really lovely lad. ‘Thank you’, ‘please’ all the time – manners cost nothing. He’s last off the training ground, wants to learn, wants to get better.

“He’s a breath of fresh air – and so is Lewie Coyle. Lewie probably can’t imagine what’s happening at the minute. Lewie’s come in to play and he can’t get in the team because of Josh’s performances.

“Lewie’s a top pro. The way he trains every day is outstanding and he’s pushing Josh every second of every day and Josh knows he’s got to stay on his toes.”
