McCann delighted for Jones after international debut

15 October 2020

Grant McCann was delighted to see Callum Jones make his international debut for Wales U19s.

The promising midfielder came off the bench in the 65thminute of the young Dragons’ 2-0 defeat to England at St George’s Park on Tuesday afternoon.

It has been a memorable start to the season for the 19-year-old, who only made his senior bow for the Tigers in last month’s EFL Trophy fixture against Leicester U21s.

That was followed by a league debut at Gillingham four days later and Carabao Cup outings against Premier League sides Leeds and West Ham.

And McCann is pleased that Jones' club performances have now been recognised at international level.

“Callum’s come a long way in no time at all,” said McCann. “Over the past four or five months, he’s excelled.

“He’s trained with us on a regular basis and the recognition to get called up by his country is brilliant for him. To come on and make his debut for the U19s was excellent.

“It’s a different environment, different players, different staff and probably a different way of going about things. It’s all a learning curve for him.

“By all accounts, he did well in the game. Cliff (Byrne) saw him when he came in late on Tuesday and he was buzzing. We’re all really pleased for him.”
