Hull City U23s 4-0 Swansea City U23s: Report

19 October 2020

Hull City U23’s returned back to winning ways with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Swansea City U23’s at the Roy West Centre. Goals from James Berry, Billy Chadwick, Callum Jones and Martin Samuelsen secured all three points for the Tigers in their latest U23 Professional Development League fixture.

Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson made six changes to the side that were defeated 3-1 away against Nottingham Forest last time out. Brandon Fleming, Sean McLoughlin, Festus Arthur, Chadwick, Jones and Samuelsen all came into the side for Danny Lupano, Jordan Hickey, Andy Smith, McCauley Snelgrove, Harry Wood and Ahmed Salam respectively.

It was the visitors who created the first chances of the match as Ali Al-Hamadi saw his header deflect wide, before from the resulting corner, Ollie Cooper’s low drilled effort went narrowly wide past the post.

The Tigers responded through Arthur, but his volley was blocked by Cameron Evans, before Samuelsen forced Jamie Searle into a smart save with his curling attempt. From the resulting corner, Arthur saw his powerful header pushed over the bar by Searle.

Ryan Hanson then won a penalty for the Tigers as he was brought down after a great passing move. Berry stepped up, but the striker blazed his spot-kick over the bar. However, Berry made amends just two minutes later as he headed

Samuelsen’s cross off the underside of the bar, before the ball bounced into the net to give the Tigers the lead at half-time.

In the second half, the Tigers created the majority of the chances as Samuelsen fired wide, after connecting with Max Sheaf’s low cross, before Chadwick saw his effort blocked by Jacob Jones. Tivonge Rushesha nearly then converted Jones’ cross into his own net, before the Tigers scored their second. McLaughlin’s long pass split open the Swansea defence for Chadwick to poke the ball past an onrushing Searle to double the Tigers’ lead.

Swansea tried to respond through Harry Pinchard as he fired his free-kick over the bar, while Cooper and Rushesha both saw attempts blocked. Al-Hamadi then saw his deflected header go wide, following a good corner routine, while at the other end, Arthur headed wide from Sheaf’s cross.

The Tigers scored their third with less than ten minutes left to play as Jones cut inside from the left wing, before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the far top corner. In stoppage-time, the Tigers received their second penalty of the game as Fleming was brought down and Samuelsen stepped up confidently to dispatch his spot-kick and the Tigers’ fourth goal as they secured all three points.
