Hull City were knocked off the top of the Sky Bet League One table by Portsmouth after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Pompey at the KCOM Stadium on Friday evening.
The top-of-the-table clash went the way of the visitors after Jacob Greaves and Josh Magennis both put through their own net.
Grant McCann made two changes to the side that lost to Blackpool in midweek. Josh
Emmanuel returned at right back in place of Lewie Coyle, while Magennis replaced Tom Eaves in the central attacking role. Coyle and Eaves were both on the bench.
Portsmouth were first to strike in only the sixth minute. A corner was delivered in for Sean Raggett to direct the ball towards goal and, despite claims from the home side for a foul, the ball found the net with the final touch coming from the unfortunate Jacob Greaves.
Mallik Wilks went close to a quick reply when firing just wide from Emmanuel’s low ball in, while Callum Elder’s deflected cross had to be turned over the bar by Portsmouth goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray.
The home side enjoyed a decent spell of possession and territory in the minutes leading up to half time, but couldn’t create the opportunity they needed to draw level before the interval.
Keane Lewis-Potter replaced James Scott at half time and his goal-bound shot was blocked within a couple of minutes of the restart.
Portsmouth doubled their lead ten minutes into the second half, and again it came from a set-piece. This time the a free kick was delivered to the far post where a looping header went over Matt Ingram before Josh Magennis's efforts to clear the ball from under the crossbar saw it end up in the net.
Regan Slater's powerful drive was pushed out by MacGillivray, his final contribution before being replaced by Eaves.
Magennis saw a header come back off the bar and Lewis-Potter sent an effort just wide late on, but the Tigers slipped to their third defeat of the week.
