Dawson on U23’s Barnsley Defeat

17 December 2020

Andy Dawson says he couldn’t fault his side’s effort after a 1-0 away defeat against Barnsley.

Cameron Thompson’s 80th minute penalty condemned the Tigers to defeat in their final game of 2020.

On the defeat..

“I thought it was a really competitive game; I think a draw would have probably been a fair result. Unfortunately, we didn’t show the quality that we have got in the side, but I thought the lads worked really hard, so we can’t question them on that. We didn’t work their keeper enough and we didn’t produce that final ball, so there’s plenty to work on and that’s what we’ll carry on doing for the rest of the week.

“You could see from both teams the determination to win the ball and win the game and that’s a great attitude for a young footballer. However, the quality really wasn’t there and that’s not being disrespectful to both teams, but neither keeper really had many shots to save. Credit to Barnsley and we’ll go again after Christmas as games will come thick and fast, but the lads have certainly done well in the first half of the season.”

James Berry returning…

“James had been injured since the Cardiff City game, so he’s been out for a good few weeks, but he’s worked hard in his rehab and Ally (Hamilton) has done a great job with him. He came on and we thought he might give us that little bit of quality or that little bit of a bright spark and to be fair, he had a great opportunity when he just came on and maybe it came just a bit too soon for him, but it’s great to have him back and it’s great to have him back round the group as well.”

Summary of 20/21 season so far…

“All the lads have set their own standards individually and collectively. They’ve played some great stuff and they’ve approached every game in the right manner, but when we come back and when the season restarts after Christmas, they’ve got to be ready to go again, because there is always people watching. Some of the lads are now going into their second or third year as professionals and there’s our first-team manager and there’s always scouts watching the games, so they know they have to perform in every training session and every game and for the majority of the season, they’ve done that, so we’ll be looking to replicate that again in early January.”
