Hull City U23’s suffered defeat in their last fixture of 2020, losing 1-0 away against Barnsley U23’s. Cameron Thompson’s 80th minute penalty sealed all three points for the hosts in the U23 Professional Development League.
Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson made three changes to the starting eleven that defeated Coventry City U23’s 2-0 last time out. Brandon Fleming, Festus Arthur and Billy Chadwick all came into the side for Jake Leake, Danny Lupano and McCauley Snelgrove respectively.
It was the Tigers who created the first opportunity of the game as Harry Wood headed over from Max Sheaf’s cross. Matty Jacob then had to be on hand to block Isaac Christie-Davis’ free-kick, before the Tigers cleared the ball off the line following a Elliot Simoes’ corner.
Christie-Davis had another free-kick moments later, but this time his effort went wide, before at the other end, Wood fired his first-timed shot over the bar following a great run and pass by Ahmed Salam.
Barnsley did have the ball in the Tigers’ net as Steve Simpson connected with Jordan Green’s cross at the back post to finish, but the goal was ruled out for offside as the first half ended goalless.
In the second half, the Tigers pushed for an opener through Fleming as he tested Corey Addai from range, following a good one-two with Sheaf, before Salam produced a vital block to deny Thompson from close-range.
Thompson went close for the hosts again moments later as his low drilled effort hit the side netting, before Hull substitute James Berry almost made an immediate impact off the bench as he volleyed a great chance wide.
With the game looking to end in a draw, Barnsley received a penalty with ten minutes left to play. Thompson stepped up and smashed his spot-kick straight down the middle to give the hosts the lead.
The Tigers almost rescued a point late on through Berry as Sheaf picked out the run of the striker in the Barnsley penalty area, but the substitute could only fire his low shot narrowly wide.
