Matthew Smith joined Hull City from Manchester City in August 2021, signing on a season-long loan at the MKM Stadium.

Born in the Midlands, Smith was initially on West Bromwich Albion’s books before joining Manchester City’s Academy at the age of 14.

Smith represented Manchester City’s Academy side in the EFL Trophy during the 2017/18 season and, having previously represented Wales at Under-17, 19 and 21 level, he made his first senior international appearance at the end of that campaign against Mexico.

The midfielder’s development continued apace the following season when he joined Dutch side FC Twente on a season-long loan, while he also became more of a regular in the international set-up as he featured in Euro 2020 qualifiers and Nations League fixtures.

After returning to the Etihad, Smith’s 2019/20 campaign was split between loan spells at Queens Park Rangers and Charlton Athletic.

Smith made a further four appearances for Wales at the start of last season before joining Doncaster Rovers on loan in October 2020. It proved to be a productive spell for the midfielder as he went on to play 43 times for Rovers before being included in the Wales squad for the delayed Euro 2020 tournament.
