Hull City are delighted to announce the signing of experienced defender John Egan from Sky Bet Championship rivals Burnley for an undisclosed fee.

The 32-year-old Republic of Ireland international has penned an 18-month deal, with a club option of a further year, becoming the Tigers’ eighth acquisition of the winter transfer window.

The Cork-born centre-back, who featured eight times for the Clarets after joining last September, has racked up over 400 career appearances, including 210 in the Championship and 73 in the Premier League.

Spending six seasons at Sheffield United from 2018 to 2024, Egan played 208 league matches for the Blades and twice helped them win promotion to the top flight as runners-up.

The commanding central defender was a pivotal part of the United side that secured an impressive ninth-placed Premier League finish in 2019/20 and reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 2023.

Starting out at Sunderland, Egan made his professional debut on loan at Crystal Palace and won Southend United’s 2013/14 Goal of the Season award before joining Gillingham permanently in 2014.

He scored 11 goals in 92 appearances for the Gills, scooping their 2014/15 Player of the Year prize and being named in the 2015/16 PFA League One Team of the Year.

Egan enjoyed two years with Brentford between 2016 and 2018, appearing 71 times for the Bees before moving to Bramall Lane for a club-record fee.

A natural leader, the centre-half has previously captained Gillingham, Brentford, Sheffield United and the Republic of Ireland, representing his country on 36 occasions.

Egan said: “I’m delighted. I’d known about the interest for a couple of weeks but wasn’t sure if it was going to happen. Last night, I got a call and I made my way over this morning.

“The club has made some really good signings in January. It’s a really good squad, a very good manager; it just needs to drive up the league now.

“The manager has steadied things and the team plays some good football, high intensity, on the front foot. They’re the type of teams you want to play in.

“I’ve played a lot of games in this division, managed to get promoted twice. Every game is really hard and the main thing is about being consistent. Having consistent standards in training leads to consistent performances on a matchday.

“I’m looking forward to the future, putting on the black and amber, being a Hull City player. I’ll give it my all, and hopefully, we can achieve success together.”

Welcome, John!
