Abu Kamara was delighted to score a crucial 82nd-minute equaliser in Monday’s 1-1 draw with with Coventry City at MKM Stadium.
The winger latched on to Nordin Amrabat’s cross-field pass before sweeping the ball into the near corner via a deflection.
“It feels great,” Kamara began. “Coming on and playing a massive role in getting a point towards our goal meant everything to me.
“I went to shoot into the far corner, but it took a deflection. We’ll take it, it is a goal at the end of the day and it got us the point.
“There was no second thought, as the ball came over I looked at where the ‘keeper was and where the goal was and I saw I was quite close, so I took a touch with the inside of my foot and thought i’m going to hit it and luckily it went in.
“The point is everything, it’s another one on the board, one closer to our goal. I want to keep this team up and I think we’re more than capable of staying in this league.”
The 21-year-old was introduced off the bench in the 58th minute alongside Amrabat, and the duo went on to combine for the vital leveller.
The Moroccan winger has a wealth of experience spanning almost two decades in professional football and Kamara detailed the benefits he has gained from playing alongside him.
“Me and Nordin (Amrabat) had a conversation about how we were going to link up,” Kamara explained. “He said to me if I’m making the run inside then to make a darting run in behind your full-back, and that’s how the goal came along.
“He’s a massive role model for me, he has taken me under his wing by giving me tips and tricks on how I can beat my man or improve everyday, so just being in and around the building with him has massively helped me.”
Monday night’s match was watched on by over 21,000 fans inside MKM Stadium and the winger went on to praise the excellent home support.
“As soon as we scored the goal, they came to life,” Kamara said. “It was almost like a second wave of energy that came into us because the fans were behind us and that was like the motivation to get us over the line.”
The goal pushed the Tigers a point further away from the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone, but Kamara insists he is still taking each game one at a time in the run-in.
He said: “To be honest, I take it game by game, I think that’s the easiest way to look at it. We’ll go into the next game trying to do our best and hopefully get the three points.
“The boss has instilled into us from training that we’ve got to fight until the very end, we’re not going to just coast and be safe.
“We’ve got to fight for what’s rightfully ours, and that’s staying in this league."
