By Hull City

Xavier Simons scored his second goal in as many matches as Hull City were held at newly promoted Derby County.

The young midfielder steered a fine low drive into the bottom corner to give the Tigers a 57th-minute lead but substitute Dajaune Brown headed home an equaliser just nine minutes later.

A second successive 1-1 draw leaves Tim Walter’s men in 15th position with 14 points from 12 matches, without a win in four games.

The boss made two alterations from the creditable draw with Burnley, with Abu Kamara and Chris Bedia replacing the injured Liam Millar and João Pedro, who was named among the substitutes.

Will Jarvis was back on the bench and Regan Slater brought up 150 appearances in black and amber.

Paul Warne’s Rams had won 11 of their previous 12 matches at Pride Park, a venue at which the Tigers had not tasted victory since a 3-0 play-off semi-final success in 2016.

City almost made a calamitous start when Ivor Pandur sprinted off his line from a cleared corner, with Slater’s header ricocheting off his legs and eluding Nathaniel Mendez-Laing with the goal vacant.

The visitors had plenty of possession and territory, with Simons and Bedia denied by Derby defenders and Mohamed Belloumi’s tame 25-yarder easy for keeper Jacob Widell Zetterström.

Kane Wilson’s downward header from Mendez-Laing’s corner was pushed away by Pandur as Derby enjoyed a period of pressure around the half-hour mark.

Simons blocked well from Marcus Harness and Ebou Adams’ scuffed half-volley from Mendez-Laing’s first-time cross was comfortable for Pandur.

Kamara capitalised on a slip to advance into the box before blazing high and wide, with Lewie Coyle also unable to hit the target with a left-footed effort after cutting inside.

Abdüş Ömür and Kasey Palmer replaced Gustavo Puerta and Slater at half-time, with the Tigers bossing the ball at the start of the second half.

Belloumi’s curler from the right was straight at Widell Zetterström, who parried Kamara’s cross-shot from the opposite side.

The breakthrough came just before the hour, Simons taking aim from 25 yards and arrowing an unerring right-footed strike that nestled into the bottom corner for his second goal in four days.

Kamara’s menacing cross evaded everyone and Coyle’s shot after collecting Belloumi’s backheel was held by Widell Zetterström as the Tigers threatened a quick-fire second.

Superb defending from Alfie Jones preserved the lead, his goalline block keeping out Nelson’s back-post header from Corey Blackett-Taylor’s cross, with Adams’ driven ball flashing across the box.

City failed to heed the warning as Derby equalised from the next set-piece, Brown looping a header over Pandur from fellow substitute Ben Osborn’s inviting 66th-minute free-kick.

Pedro, introduced for Bedia just before the goal, glanced wide from Hughes’ flighted cross, with fellow forward Mason Burstow also coming on.

The closest either side came to a winner in seven minutes of stoppage time was when Blackett-Taylor tricked his way into the box before skying his shot over the bar.
