Hull City suffered a first defeat of the Sky Bet Championship season at the hands of Yorkshire rivals Leeds United.

Second-half goals from Mateo Joseph and substitute Joël Piroe leave the Tigers winless after four league matches.

The only change saw Chris Bedia come in for his full debut ahead of Mason Burstow, who was named among the substitutes, along with new faces Gustavo Puerta and Kasey Palmer.

Fellow deadline day recruits Carl Rushworth, Mohamed Belloumi and Abu Kamara were not involved.

Last season’s play-off finalists were quick out of the traps and created three chances inside the opening 10 minutes.

Wilfried Gnonto’s effort was blocked by Óscar Zambrano, Ilia Gruev’s left-footed strike was safely gathered by Ivor Pandur and Jayden Bogle’s high near-post finish crashed into the side-netting.

Joseph’s deflected cross forced Pandur to push over, with the resulting corner, delivered low by Brenden Aaronson, helped on by Pascal Struijk for Gnonto to touch home – but from an offside position.

The Tigers’ first moment of promise came on 24 minutes when Bedia outmuscled Joe Rodon and unleashed a rasping strike that Ilan Meslier tipped over one-handed.

Liam Millar curled over from the edge of the area and Regan Slater failed to pick out a teammate after Leeds lost possession in their defensive third as City gained a foothold.

The Whites rediscovered their rhythm after the restart with Manor Solomon’s shot blocked by Lewie Coyle and breaking for Aaronson to side-foot too close to Pandur.

Coyle also blocked attempts from Gnonto and Junior Firpo, and Solomon’s weak curler was straight at Pandur.

The home defence snuffed out efforts from Millar, who also headed over, and Slater, who was withdrawn for Will Jarvis on the hour.

City’s resistance was broken on 63 minutes when Solomon skipped away from Jarvis and crossed to the near post, with Joseph nipping ahead of Sean McLoughlin and Pandur to poke home.

With his team creating little, Tim Walter turned to his bench in search of a response, handing a debut to Palmer and bringing on Xavier Simons.

Leeds broke at pace to double their lead eight minutes from time, Joseph feeding Firpo to swing the ball across for Piroe, who took a touch to compose himself before slotting past Pandur.

Mason Burstow and Cody Drameh entered the fray but the contest was already beyond the visitors.
