An in-depth look into our new summer recruit, Tyler Morton…

Born in Wallasey, Merseyside, Morton played for Greenleas junior team and attracted the interest of both Everton and Liverpool at the age of seven, choosing the latter in 2009.

Progressing through the Reds’ youth system, the midfielder netted on only his third Under-18s appearance, scoring the final goal in a 6-1 victory in the Merseyside derby against the Toffees in the Under-18 Premier League.

Also netting in the Under-19 UEFA Youth League Round of 16 tie against Benfica, Morton ended the 2019/20 campaign with two goals and three assists in 14 appearances in all competitions.

The following campaign saw the now 20-year-old be an influential figure for both the Under-18s and Under-21s. Netting five goals and registering three assists in 14 Premier League 2 appearances, with four goals in consecutive fixtures, Morton also recorded three strikes and three assists in five U18 Premier League outing. The main tournament, however, was the FA Youth Cup, where Morton guided the Reds to the final of the prestigious youth competition.

Netting in their third round 6-0 victory over Sutton United, the midfielder netted the only of the game in the following round, a 1-0 away win against Manchester United. Registering an assist in the quarter-final win over Arsenal, he played the full game in a narrow 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa in the final.

The 2021/22 season saw the midfielder make his first-team breakthrough. Making his competitive debut as a second-half substitute in the EFL Cup against Norwich City, Morton made his Premier League bow against Arsenal two months later before featuring in the UEFA Champions League, playing the full game in a 2-0 victory over Porto.

The following month saw Morton earn his first Premier League start against Tottenham Hotspur. In total, Morton made nine first-team appearances and featured 26 times for their youth teams in seven different competitions, along with winning the Lancashire Senior Cup. The first team won both the EFL Cup and FA Cup, with the midfielder featuring in both competitions.

Last campaign saw Morton make his first career loan when moving to Sky Bet Championship side Blackburn Rovers. Making his debut as a substitute in a 3-0 away victory over Swansea City, he made 46 appearances in all competitions, registering four assists before his loan spell was cut short after suffering a fractured metatarsal.

Internationally, Morton has represented England Under-20s three times, earning all three caps in the Under-20 Elite League Group stages where he faced Portugal, Poland and Germany. He has also been named on the bench twice for England Under-21s, being an unused substitute in friendly victories against Italy and Germany.
