Under-21s defender Ajay Weston was delighted to net his first Hull City goal after a 3-1 victory over North Ferriby FC.
After finishes from Trialist A and Nathan Tinsdale gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead, Weston secured the win with a delicate finish in the 81st-minute to help the club retain the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy.
“It is a great feeling to get a goal and contribute to the team. My eyes lit up and I knew Jim (Simms) was on the ball to play it to me,” said Weston.
“I am an attacking full-back. I love to get forward, contribute and do as much as I can so I am buzzing to have scored.
“It was a good experience playing against another men’s side. I thought we stuck well especially in the first half with the long balls.
“It was quite hard to defend the long balls, especially on my side coming up against a tricky winger (Danny Earl), but we all stuck together as a team and that is what was crucial.
“We know that if we go behind, we have the ability in the squad to flip the game and that is exactly what we did. I think we deserved more goals as we hit the woodwork a number of times, but we will take the win.”
After playing against senior sides of Fatih Karagümrük, Scarborough Athletic, Bridlington Town and North Ferriby, the Under-21s’ final pre-season test comes in the form of Premier League side Liverpool respected Under-21 side.
Looking ahead to facing Barry Lewtas’ side, Weston is eager to impress against one of the best academies in world football.
“It was great (to retain the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy). We deserved the win against Ferriby and it was great to win a bit of silverware, but now we are all focused on putting in a good performance against Liverpool next week,” explained Weston.
“It is a great opportunity to play against some top international players as you can compare yourself to their standard. I don’t go there with any doubts that we will put on a good performance and do what we can do. It will be a tough game, but I think we are ready for the challenge.”
