Hull City Under-21s returned to winning ways as they defeated Barnsley 3-0 at the Dransfield Stadium.

First-half finishes from Harry Wood, Adama Traoré and Jim Simms saw the Tigers move into the Professional Development League play-offs after earning all three points.

Conor Sellars made three changes to the side that were defeated narrowly 2-1 by the Tykes in the reverse of this fixture last time out. Harry Vaughan came in to make his Under-21s debut in place of Jack Leckie, while Louie Chorlton and Alfie Taylor, replacing on-loan duo Tom Nixon and Jevon Mills respectively.

Prior to the fixture, both teams observed a minute’s silence to pay respect to those affected by the tragedy in Türkiye.

It took the Tigers just four minutes to open the scoring as Traoré teed up Wood to drill a first-time shot from 25-yards into the bottom corner.

The provider turned scorer just six minutes later. The ball worked its way to the edge of the area and after shifting the ball onto his left foot, the Mali international placed his effort into the far corner to double the Tigers’ lead.

Will Jarvis searched for a third as his near-post attempt was held by Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Hayton, while Taylor blocked well to deny Charlie Williams at the other end.

David Robson was then called into action to first deny Clarke Odour before acrobatically pushing over Harrison Nejman’s dipping drive.

On the 33rd minute, the Tigers had their third. A quick initial counter attack saw Jarvis play in Callum Jones, who played an out-of-the-foot cross towards Simms, who guided his header into the far corner.

The visitors continued their search to get on the scoresheet as Robson saved against Nejman and Luke Thomas before Danny Benson blasted over from a corner delivery.

A minute before half-time, Odour hit the crossbar from six-yards after a whipped delivery deflected into his path.

Chances were a premium in the second half as Hayton held Jarvis’ drilled strike before the winger set up Jones to shoot, but the midfielder’s first-time attempt deflected wide of the right-hand post.

At the other end, Robson denied Odour before substitute Fareed Salifu somehow missed from close-range after crafting his chance inside the Tigers’ penalty area.
