The Under-18s suffered a 3-0 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday in the Professional Development League.
First-half finishes from Joey Phuthi, Cian Flannery and Devlan Moses secured the three points for the visitors at Bishop Burton College.
John Anderson made two changes to his starting XI to the side that faced Peterborough United last time out. An unnamed trialist and Jaedyn Chibanga came into the starting XI for Archie Cooper and Sam Opoku respectively.
Both teams fired chances off-target in the opening exchanges of the fixture, with City’s Keegan Green and Wednesday’s Moses having the opportunities.
MacKenzie Maltby then volleyed over from Flannery’s free-kick before the visitors opened the scoring on the 16th-minute, as Phuthi cut inside from the left wing before curling his finish into the top corner.
Glen Sani searched for an equaliser, but his left-footed strike on the turn was held by goalkeeper Jack Hall.
Wednesday netted their second on the 28th-minute as from a corner routine, Maltby’s drive deflected into the path of Flannery who converted from six-yards.
Two minutes later, the Tigers’ trialist saw two shots blocked by the visiting defence before Moses netted a third for the Owls five minutes before half-time, with his deflected strike finding the bottom corner.
Chances were a premium in the second-half, with the Tigers receiving a penalty on the 52nd-minute. After Jake Brown was fouled by Carlos Rodrigues, the winger stepped up himself to take the spot-kick. However, Hall dived the correct way to push away Brown’s penalty.
The Tigers’ winger saw a later attempt deflect wide off Jarvis Thornton before Bruno Fernandes saw his effort blocked by Stan Ashbee at the other end.
In stoppage-time, Sheffield Wednesday had two chances to increase the scoreline. Maltby headed wide from Flannery’s corner before Moses dragged his one-on-one effort wide of the goal.
