With the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked-off, we take a look at the five players in the club’s history who represented their respected nations at the World Cup while with Hull City.
#1 - Richard Garcia (Australia)
The first Hull City player to represent their nation at a World Cup was Richard Garcia for Australia in South Africa 2010.
Being selected by manager Jim Verbeek, Garcia was allocated the number 19 shirt with the Socceroos placed in Group D alongside Germany, Ghana and Serbia.
Garcia started the opening game at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Garcia played 63 minutes before being substituted for Nikita Rukavytsya as Germany prevailed as 4-0 victors. Tim Cahill was sent off in the fixture, with the goals coming from Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Müller and Cacau.
Garcia was an unused substitute in the second group fixture against Ghana, a 1-1 draw before featuring in the final group stage fixture against Serbia, coming on as a 82nd minute substitute for Luke Wilkshire in a 2-1 win.
Despite being level on points with Ghana, due to the Black Stars having a superior goal difference, Australia finished third in Group D.
#2 - Nikica Jelavić (Croatia)
Receiving the first pass of the 2014 World Cup, Nikica Jelavić started the opening game of the tournament against host nation Brazil.
Featuring in Group A with hosts Brazil, Cameroon and Mexico, the striker was awarded the 9 shirt by coach Niko Kovač. Starting the first game against Brazil and earning his 34th cap for his country, Croatia took the lead at the Arena de Sāo Paulo courtesy of an own goal from Marcelo in the 12th minute.
However, a brace from Neymar and stoppage-time finish from then Chelsea midfielder Oscar saw Brazil win the fixture, with Jelavić playing 77 minutes before being replaced by Ante Rebić.
Jelavić was an unused substitute in Croatia’s second group game, a 4-0 victory over Cameroon, but were knocked out in the group stages following a 3-1 defeat against Mexico.
Jelavić came on as a second-half substitute in the fixture at the Itaipava Arena Pernambuco, Recife, replacing Daniel Pranjic in the 73rd minute, but three goals in 10 minutes from Rafael Márquez, Andrés Guardado and Javier Hernández saw Mexico progress to the knockout stages.
#3 - Maynor Figueroa (Honduras)
The other Hull City player to represent their nation at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Maynor Figueroa made 38 appearances in his first season with the Tigers heading into the tournament.
The left-back was the most capped outfield player for Honduras in their squad with 105 caps to his name, 17 behind goalkeeper and captain Noel Valladares, with Figueroa being allocated the number 3 shirt.
In Group E with Ecuador, France and Switzerland, Figueroa played every minute of Honduras’ three group stage fixtures, starting with a 3-0 defeat against France. Valladares netted an own goal after Karim Benzema netted a brace.
In the second group fixture against Ecuador, Carlo Costly gave Honduras a 31st minute lead, but a brace from Enner Valencia saw Ecuador reign 2-1 victors at the Arena da Baixada, Curitiba.
The final group stage fixture saw a 3-0 defeat against Switzerland, courtesy of a hat-trick from Xherdan Shaqiri.
#4 - Jackson Irvine (Australia)
The second Hull City player to represent the Socceroos at a World Cup, Jackson Irvine netted two goals in 37 appearances in his debut campaign with the Tigers.
Scoring in victories over Brentford and Norwich City, Irvine was called up by Bert van Marwijk and was allocated the number 22 shirt, with Australia in Group C with France, Denmark and Peru.
Irvine was used as a second-half substitute, replacing Tom Rogic all three times in Australia’s three group games. Coming on in the 72nd minute, Irvine couldn’t help the Socceroos as they lost 2-1 against France in their opening game before the Melbourne midfielder played eight minutes in their second game, a 1-1 draw against Denmark.
In the final game for Australia, Irvine was once again introduced in the 72nd minute against Peru at the Fisht Olympic Stadium. Sadly for the Socceroos, their World Cup journey was ended as finishes in each half from André Carrillo and Paolo Guerrero gave Peru the three points, with Australia finishing bottom of Group C.
#5 - Kamil Grosicki (Poland)
Our other player who represented his nation at the 2018 World Cup, Kamil Grosicki enjoyed his first full season at Hull City, scoring nine goals and getting six assists in 38 appearances.
Competing in Group H against Colombia, Japan and Senegal, Poland’s opening group fixture was against the latter at the Mordovia Stadium, Saransk.
Grosicki, who as allocated the number 11 shirt, played the full fixture as they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat. An own goal by Thiago Cionek opened the scoring before M’Baye Niang doubled Senegal’s lead. Grzegorz Krychowiak did pull a goal back four minutes from time, with Grosicki getting the assist.
In the second fixture against Colombia, Grosicki was a second-half substitute as Poland suffered a 3-0 defeat. “Turbo” replaced David Kownacki in the 57th minute as finishes from Yerry Mina, Falcao and Juan Cuadrado secured Colombia the win.
Grosicki was restored to the starting XI for the final group fixture at the Volgograd Arena against Japan, playing the full game in a 1-0 win.
The result however wasn’t enough for Poland to qualify for the knockout stages, finishing bottom of Group H with three points.
