Jones left frustrated by defeat to West Bromwich Albion

7 March 2022

Defender Alfie Jones was left frustrated that the team were unable to take their chances as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against West Bromwich Albion.

Goals from Karlan Grant either side of half-time were enough to send the Baggies home from the MKM Stadium with all three points.

“We found it hard to get out in the first 15 or 20 minutes, but then we got into our groove and started getting the ball down, playing some nice football, switching the play and opening them up,” said Jones.

“On another day, we would’ve got on the end of the crosses that went across the box and scored a few goals. It’s frustrating that we didn’t do that.

“I think they set the tone and got in our faces quickly and we didn’t deal with that at the start. As the game went on, we got into the game and started moving the ball a bit better, getting the ball into the pockets and hurting them, so that was pleasing to see.

“We conceded two frustrating goals and then didn’t take our own chances.”

After a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury, Jones has featured in six of the Tigers’ last eight Championship games, and is hopeful he can get a good run of games under the management of Shota Arveladze.

“I’m feeling good,” added Jones.

“I’m feeling physically fit. It’s just about getting that run of games under my belt. It’s been a frustrating period for me and I’m just grateful to be back in the team and hopefully I can continue to stay in the team and string a run of games together.”

With a trip to Birmingham City up next for the Tigers, Jones says it is crucial for the team to remain focused.

“We just want to pick points up each game,” explained Jones.

“We need to start getting results and climbing our way up the table. We just need to look forward to the game on Saturday and get some points there (against Birmingham City).”
