Hull City U18 0-3 Sheffield United U18: Match Report

25 March 2022

Hull City Under-18s suffered a 0-3 defeat against top-of-the-table Sheffield United at Bishop Burton College.

Goals from Josh Smith, Will Lankshear and Theo Williams gave the Blades all three points in the Professional Development League.

John Anderson and Billy Clarke made one change to the starting XI that defeated Barnsley 1-0 last time out. Sam Opoku came into the team to replace Harry Wallis, while Alfie Taylor took the captain’s armband.

It was a fast start from the visitors as the unnamed trialist blocked Charlie Staniland’s effort, before Smith put the Blades into the lead on three minutes with a stunning strike that found the top corner. Lankshear looked to double their lead minutes later, but he forced Tom Macauley into a good save, before the trialist blocked another Staniland attempt.

The Tigers started to grow into the game as Sincere Hall tested Henry Hampshaw in the Sheffield United goal, before Aman Panesar drilled his effort narrowly wide, following good work by Taylor and Glen Sani to create the opportunity.

James Carr then picked out the run of Hall, who could only volley over, with the forward almost turning provider moments later. Hall’s corner delivery picked out the run of Taylor, who’s initial header was blocked, before Panesar fired wide from the rebound.

At the other end, Macauley had to be alert to flick Fernando Macedo’s long-range free-kick around the left-hand post, before Lankshear doubled the visitors’ lead as he converted Smith’s corner delivery in from close-range. Immediately from the kick-off, Hall almost reduced the deficit as he drove into space to shoot, but his curling strike was pushed over the bar by Hampshaw.

Sheffield United added a third four minutes into the second half as Staniland picked out the run of Williams, who calmly converted his one-on-one effort. The visitors created more opportunities as Williams and Lankshear both fired chances off-target, before the unnamed trialist forced a good save from Hampshaw as his cross-shot caused problems in the Blades’ penalty area.

Hall produced a similar chance to the trialist 10 minutes later as his fierce drive flashed across goal, while Sani was denied by Hampshaw at his near post after the forward was played in by Jake Brown.

In the other goal, Macauley blocked Staniland’s deflected cross from point-blank range, before Brown was denied by a combination of Hampshaw and the Blades’ defence as his effort deflected wide in injury-time.
