Arthur: We went back to basics

8 March 2022

Defender Festus Arthur says the team went back to basics as the Under-23s returned to winning ways against Wigan Athletic.

The Tigers reigned 2-1 victors at the MKM Stadium as Mallik Wilks’ brace helped secure the three points for Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson’s side in the Professional Development League.

“It was a good reaction from last Tuesday against Sheffield United,” said Arthur.

“We started the game well. We tried to go back to basics and overall I thought it was a good reaction.

“Wigan got a goal that equalised the game, but we did well to come back. We didn’t give up and we got that decisive goal to win the game.

“They were very direct. They loved stepping in and producing the diagonal pass across the field. It did test us as different games and teams provides different challenges as they all play different styes of football, but I thought we dealt with it quite well.”

Speaking on Wilks’ brace as well as the opportunity to play at the MKM Stadium, Arthur added: “It’s what Mallik does on a daily basis. He just scores goals and we needed him to help us get the three points.

“It was good to play at the MKM Stadium in front of fans. I hope they were proud of the performance and hopefully we can do the same on Friday when we face Colchester United. We will be going into the game looking for the win and the clean sheet.”
