Season Fixtures: The Numbers

23 June 2022

Heading into the 2022/23 Sky Bet Championship season, we take a look at who we face on key dates…

The club will kick off its 107th league season and 62nd campaign in the second tier of English football with a home game against Bristol City. It will be the second time we have faced the Robins on opening day, with the other instance coming in 1982/83. In Colin Appleton’s first league fixture in Division Four, the Tigers suffered a 2-1 defeat at Ashton Gate, despite Andy Flounders netting from the bench.

This will be the 52nd time we have opened our league campaign at home, winning 25 of them. Scoring 77 home goals on opening day, the Tigers last started their league campaign at base four seasons ago when Nigel Adkins’ side were beaten 3-1 by Aston Villa.

On Boxing Day, we host Blackpool at the MKM Stadium. We have played the Tangerines three times on Boxing Day, twice away and once at home, winning two and drawing one. The last instance came in 1979, with Keith Edwards scoring a brace in a 2-2 draw at Bloomfield Road.

Our last home Boxing Day clash against the Tangerines came in 1933. Over 15,000 fans attended Anlaby Road to see Haydn Green’s team defeat Blackpool 3-0, courtesy of a finish from Stanley Denby and a brace from George MacKenzie.

On New Year’s Day, we travel to newly promoted Wigan Athletic. It will be the first meeting with the Latics on 1st January, with our last trip to the DW Stadium ending in a 5-0 victory during our League One title-winning campaign of 2020/21. We have played 38 times on New Year’s Day, winning 13 times.

We conclude the regular 2022/23 season with an away trip to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town. It is over 70 years since we ended the 1950/51 season against the Hatters with an eight-goal thriller at Boothferry Park.

Don Revie began the Tigers’ scoring before Syd Gerrie, Alf Ackerman, Ken Harrison and an own goal saw Raich Carter’s side end their Division Two campaign in 10th place after a 5-3 victory.
