The Story So Far: Ozan Tufan

1 July 2022

An in-depth look at the career of the Tigers’ second summer recruit for the 2022/23 season, Ozan Tufan…

Born in Orhaneli, Türkiye, Tufan started his youth career at Bursaspor in 2005, spending seven years in their academy.

The then 17-year-old made a goalscoring debut for the first team, netting in a 6-0 second-leg victory over Finnish side KuPS in the UEFA Europa League third-qualifying round in September 2012.

Making a combined 13 appearances across three domestic competitions (Süper Lig, Türkiye Kupasi, Europa League) in his first season, the midfielder spent a further two seasons at the Yeşil Timsahlar (Green Crocodiles), scoring four goals and registering 10 assists in 66 appearances.

A versatile player who can play anywhere across the midfield and both right-back and right wing, his form at Bursaspor earned him a €7 million move to 19-time Süper Lig champions Fenerbahçe in August 2015.

He made his debut later in the month, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 1-1 draw against Caykur Rizespor. In November 2015, Tufan scored his first goal for Fenerbahçe, netting the second in a 2-0 win over Norwegian side Molde FK in Europa League Group A.

Featuring regularly for Fenerbahçe throughout the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons, Tufan was restricted to 14 appearances in his third season, scoring three goals.

The following year, he was sent to fellow Süper Lig side Alanyaspor on loan, making 19 appearances in all competitions.

Upon his return to Fenerbahçe, the midfielder scored six goals in each of the next two seasons before joining Watford on loan at the start of the 2021/22 season.

Tufan made his Hornets debut in the EFL Cup third round against Stoke City before making his Premier League debut four days later against Newcastle United. He made 18 appearances for Watford before moving back to Fenerbahçe for the second half of the campaign.

Overall, he made 216 appearances for Fenerbahçe, with 182 of them being starts. Scoring 21 goals and registering 24 assists, Tufan becomes the first Hull City player to hail from Türkiye.

Internationally, the 27-year-old has represented Türkiye at youth level, representing the Under-17s, Under-18s and Under-19s. With the latter, he won a silver medal at the 2013 Mediterranean Games and represented his nation at the 2013 UEFA European Under-19 Championships.

In May 2014, Tufan played his first match for the senior team against Ireland and scored his first goal four months later – a 90th-minute winner over Denmark. Tufan has 65 caps to his name, scoring nine goals.
