Born in the south-western city of Grand-Béréby in Ivory Coast, Jean Michaël Seri started his footballing career at the Ivorian Football Academy, set up by former Marseille and AC Milan defender Cyril Domoraud.
Beginning his youth career at Abidjan club Africa Sports d’Abidjan in July 2007, the midfielder spent just under three years with the Young Eagles, before moving to Ivory Coast’s most successful club to date, ASEC Mimosas.
His early good form in his native country saw him earn a loan move to Portugal in the form of FC Porto. He would only feature for the B team during his spell there, scoring once in 19 Segunda Liga appearances.
In August 2013, the 30-year-old returned to Portugal to sign for Primeira Liga side Paços de Ferreira on a permanent deal. Debutising a month later against Benfica, his first goal for the Pacenses came in a 3-1 home win over Marítimo in March 2014.
Scoring three goals and registering seven assists in 69 appearances for Paços de Ferreira earned him a move to Ligue 1 side OGC Nice. Making his debut on the opening match of the 2015/16 Ligue 1 season, playing the full game against Monaco, Seri would score his first goal for the club in a 4-1 victory over Saint-Étienne a month later.
Featuring in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, alongside the top French competitions for Nice, Seri racked up 123 appearances for the club, scoring 12 times and registering 25 assists.
In July 2018, Seri crossed the English channel to join Fulham on a four-year contract. The midfielder made an immediate impact by scoring his first goal for the Cottagers against Burnley the following month, with the goal winning the Premier League Goal of the Month for August.
The following season, Seri spent time on loan in Turkey with Galatasaray. Featuring in the Süper Lig, Türkiye Kupasi, TFF Süper Kupa and the UEFA Champions League for Galatasaray. Combined, the midfielder made 37 appearances for the Turkish giants, winning the TFF Süper Kupa.
He would then join the Ligue 1 side Bordeaux in January 2021, making 13 appearances, before returning to Fulham for the 2021/22 season. Instrumental in the midfield for Marco Silva’s side, Seri made 33 appearances in the Sky Bet Championship, scoring once, as the Cottagers won the league title.
Internationally, the 30-year-old represented Ivory Coast first at Under-23s level. Making a total of three appearances in the 2011 Africa Under-23 Cup of Nations, Seri would later go on to make his senior debut against Sierra Leone in September 2015. Overall, the midfielder has earned 34 caps for his country, netting three goals.
