Honeyman: 'Hopefully that's a sign of things to come'

20 January 2022

Midfielder George Honeyman has praised his teammates for bouncing back from defeat against Stoke City to beat Blackburn Rovers 2-0 at the MKM Stadium.

Honeyman and Tom Eaves netted the goals for the Tigers to ensure that the new era under Acun Ilıcalı’s ownership began with a win.

"It was a really good win considering it's come three days after one of our worst performances of the season," said Honeyman.

"I think that's credit to the lads and the staff for how quickly we've turned that around against a really good team. The lads really showed up tonight and it was a pleasure to be out there with them.

"To be a good team, you've got to be consistent and we've spoken about that in the dressing room. It's another really big and tough game away at Bournemouth on Saturday and we've got to go out there with the same mentality and try and get a win."

Just under 14,000 supporters were in attendance as Ilıcalı was introduced to the crowd before the game, and Honeyman says the atmosphere did provide extra motivation to the players.

"We heard it in the warm-up and it was good as I genuinely feel that helped our performance as a team massively," added Honeyman.

"Hopefully that’s a sign of things to come as we don’t want it to just be a one off. If we keep putting in performances like that and producing wins, the attendance will starting growing again.

"That’s what us as footballers and the club want. It would be great if we could get atmospheres like that every week at the MKM."
