Elder, Wilks & Magennis unavailable for Everton

6 January 2022

Head Coach Grant McCann had mixed news to report on the injury front ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Everton.

The Tigers will be looking to cause a cup upset when Rafael Benitez’s Toffees - currently 15th in the Premier League - visit the MKM Stadium.

Having had a depleted squad to choose from for the trip to Blackpool on New Year’s Day, McCann has provided an update on how the group is shaping up.

“We have Tom Huddlestone, Matt Ingram and Will Jarvis back,” said McCann.

“We’ve lost Josh Magennis to a hamstring injury which will keep him out of the game on Saturday. Hopefully he’ll be OK for Stoke. It’s not bad - it’s more of a fatigue injury. We won’t take a risk or a gamble with him this week. Hopefully, he’ll be ready to go again and be fit and available for selection against Stoke.

“We’ve lost Callum Elder which is a worse injury than what we thought actually. He’s probably going to miss the rest of the month. He made a signal to me about 15 or 20 minutes into the Blackpool game that he’d felt his groin. It’s disappointing to lose him because he’s a big player for us.

“Mallik Wilks has picked up a metatarsal injury which will keep him out for about eight weeks. We’re disappointed for Mallik. It’s been stop-start for him this season. He missed a big chunk of the start of the season through injury. It’s frustrating for us and Mallik but he’s around good people who will help him recover.”

Away from the disappointment of losing Elder, Wilks and Magennis to injury, McCann is pleased to have Huddlestone back available for selection for the visit of Everton.

“It’s nice to have as many fit and available players as possible,” said McCann.

“Tom has got real knowledge and experience of the Premier League and the Championship. He’s missed 10 days of training and has come back in to train a couple of days this week. We’ve got to put everything into perspective when we’re thinking about picking the team.”
