Hull City 0-1 Preston North End: Match Report

5 February 2022

Hull City’s three-match winning streak came to an end as they suffered a 1-0 defeat against Preston North End at the MKM Stadium.

Cameron Archer’s second half strike secured the three points for the Lilywhites in the Sky Bet Championship.

Shota Arveladze made just one change to his starting XI that defeated Swansea City 2-0 last time out. Matt Ingram replaced Nathan Baxter in-between the sticks, while new signings Allahyar Sayyahmanesh, Marcus Forss and Liam Walsh were all named on the substitutes bench.

The Tigers had the first opportunity of the fixture as Di’Shon Bernard met George Honeyman’s corner delivery, with the defender’s header causing problems for the Preston defence, who eventually cleared. At the other end, Jacob Greaves produced a perfectly timed challenge to knock away a through ball for Archer, before Brad Potts’ effort was blocked by Bernard.

The visitors started to create chances as Sean McLoughlin cleared Emil Riis Jakobsen’s cross-shot off the line, before Andrew Hughes hit the bar with a looping header, with the rebound from Riis pushed away by Ingram. In the other goal, Daniel Iversen produced a stunning save from point-blank range to block Tom Eaves’ diving header, while Bernard headed wide from Honeyman’s free-kick.

It was end-to-end as the first half drew to a close as Ingram denied Archer with his leg, before the Preston forward saw a later strike hit the post, with Greaves getting ahead of Riis for the rebound.

Five minutes into the second half, Alan Browne thought he had given Preston the lead after he drilled a shot into the roof of the net, but the referee ruled it out for a handball in the build-up. However, Preston did find the opener just minutes later as Archer rifled his low effort into the bottom corner.

Eaves looked to have got the Tigers level as he converted Greg Docherty’s precise pass, but the striker’s finish was ruled out for offside. Richie Smallwood’s drive was then deflected off a Preston defender over the bar.

In stoppage time, Eaves’ dangerous cross was parried by Iversen, before Greaves headed wide from the eventual corner.
