Defender Lewie Coyle believes there are ‘a lot of positives’ to take from the team’s performance against Fulham, as the Tigers prepare to return to action against Sheffield United.
The Tigers were narrowly beaten by the league leaders at the MKM Stadium, as Aleksandar Mitrović’s second-half header saw the Cottagers return to West London with all three points after a hard-fought contest.
“I think it was that final bit of quality that’s cost us the game in terms of them coming away with the three points,” said Coyle.
“We nullified them for large parts of the game, which against a top side like Fulham, is never easy to do. We had to be well-organised and structured defensively.
“We had our fair share of chances. I think if a couple of our chances go in then it’s a completely different game but ultimately we’ve lost and I put that down to that final bit of quality they had at the top end of the pitch.”
After a disappointing display a few days prior at Pride Park against Derby County, Coyle believes that the performance against Fulham was much-improved and one for the players to build on ahead of two more challenging fixtures this week.
“We came up against a top-level team and we knew it was going to be tough but I think we can take a lot of positives knowing that we had our fair share of chances,” added Coyle.
“Ultimately, especially against the top sides, it’s critical that we take our chances. Sides like Fulham are always going to have spells and it’s just about staying in the game when they have those moments and are on top.
“This group always comes back from adversity and negative defeats or performances and that was the case against Fulham. Even though we lost the game, we can take huge positives from it going into the game against Sheffield United.”
