Coyle delighted to mark return with a goal

16 April 2022

Defender Lewie Coyle was thrilled to mark his return to the side with a goal, but said getting back to winning ways at home was more important.

The 26-year-old netted on his first appearance since mid-February with a wonderful left-footed finish into the bottom corner to help the Tigers secure a 2-1 victory against Cardiff City at the MKM Stadium.

“I think more importantly we got that home win,” said Coyle when asked about his goalscoring return.

“That’s been something on our minds for a while now. To get three points at home in front of the fans was fantastic.”

Not only did the win against the Bluebirds end a six-game winless run at home for the Tigers, but it also secured safety in the Championship following last season’s promotion from League One. However, Coyle insists the players are not satisfied with just surviving.

“We all want to be at this level,” explained Coyle.

“We showed last year the ambition within the side to win the league title and get ourselves into this division where we felt we could make good strides.

“We don’t want to be a side that’s just staying up and constantly fighting down that end of the table.

“We’re all realistic that it’s a very tough league, and of course survival is a fantastic achievement, but we want to be looking up that end of the table and trying to test ourselves and see how far we can go.”

Coyle’s 11th-minute strike was just his second goal for the Tigers - and first in the league - and he was delighted to see his effort find the bottom corner after being picked out by Regan Slater.

“Regan’s vision speaks for itself,” added Coyle.

“He’s opened up and seen me arriving into that space. He’s laid it on a plate for me and if I’m honest I just had a swing at it with my left foot.

“Fortunately, for me and the team, it nestled nicely into the bottom corner.”
