Dawson on U23s Swansea Victory

14 September 2021

Lead PDP Coach Andy Dawson praised his side for the way they performed in the 1-0 victory over Swansea City U23s at the LNER Community Stadium.

Will Jarvis’ second-half finish secured the Tigers all three points in Professional Development League North.

On the Victory…

“I’m really pleased with the result. I thought the lads deserved it as they played some fantastic football. We’re a bit disappointed that we didn’t get another one or two goals, but that’s credit to Swansea’s goalkeeper.

“The team were bright and brave in possession which is what we ask of them. If you’re going to play good football, you have to be brave and receive the ball in tight areas. You have to make forward runs and we had three or four good chances in the game and we’ll keep working on that as they’re young footballers, but overall we’re really pleased for them on this performance.”

Will Jarvis’ Goal…

“We said at half-time that we had four or five one-on-ones and we probably had enough chances to win two or three games. Swansea were resilient and we needed that final pass or that final bit of quality and it was an excellent finish by ‘Jarvo’. We see that from him every day in training and that’s what we’ll continue to ask more of him, because he’s an attacking player and he’ll progress through the ranks by creating and scoring goals and that’s what we challenge all of our forwards to do.”

Clean Sheet Mentality…

“I thought defensively we were very good. Tom Nixon, Brandon Fleming, Henry Curtis and the two second-year scholars in Jevon (Mills) and Alfie (Taylor) were excellent tonight. I thought they all played the ball at the right time, but they also put their bodies on the line, headed the crosses and dealt with them well. On top of that, Harvey (Cartwright), when called upon, made two or three fantastic saves so it was an overall great result, but when you get a clean sheet, it starts from the front so full credit to them all.”
