Hull City U23s 4-0 Crewe Alexandra U23s: Match Report

12 October 2021

Hull City U23s maintained their 100% home record with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra U23s at the LNER Community Stadium.

A brace from McCauley Snelgrove and goals in each half from Oliver Green and Tom Nixon secured the Tigers all three points in the Professional Development League.

Tony Pennock took the managerial reigns and made three changes to the starting XI that faced Peterborough United last time out. Loanee duo Andy Smith and Festus Arthur featured alongside Sean McLoughlin, while fellow first-team member Ryan Longman started up front.

The Tigers created the majority of chances in the first half as Josh Hinds saw his effort blocked before Snelgrove saw his looping header held by Tom Booth. The Crewe goalkeeper then produced a good save to deny Will Jarvis at his near post while David Robson blocked well to deny Connor Salisbury one-on-one in the other goal.

Green opened the scoring on the half-hour mark after Hinds saw his initial effort hit the crossbar. The loose ball found the midfielder who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Longman and Jarvis both had chances to double the Tigers’ lead before the half-time break, with Longman firing narrowly wide and Jarvis forcing a save from Booth.

In the second half, Longman, Arthur and Nixon all fired chances off target, before Snelgrove scored the Tigers’ second. The forward saw his initial effort saved by Booth before Jarvis crossed in the loose ball for Snelgrove to guide his header into the far corner.

Seven minutes later, the forward secured his brace as Nixon saw his shot saved by Booth. The rebound found its way to the left wing and after a good initial cross, Snelgrove fired in from close range.

Booth then denied Snelgrove his hat-trick moments later before the Tigers’ forward turned provider in injury time, producing a low cross for Nixon to convert at the back post.
