McCann Provides Coyle Injury Update

18 November 2021

Grant McCann has confirmed that defender Lewie Coyle will be out of action for a number of weeks after picking up an ankle injury against Barnsley.

The right-back was forced off after 37 minutes in the 2-0 win at Oakwell, and now faces an extended spell on the sidelines as the Tigers prepare to return to action against Birmingham City.

“It’s unfortunate to lose Lewie,” said McCann.

“Initially after the game against Barnsley, we were all adamant that it was a kick that he had received. Lewie was also adamant that he’d just felt a kick on his ankle. We didn’t think it was too bad.

“Having reviewed the video footage of it, he does roll his ankle after the kick which has caused some ligament damage. It’s going to keep him out for weeks - I’m not sure myself (on the exact timescale). We just have to take it week by week and see where he is.”

Two players who are available for selection against Birmingham are Josh Magennis and Callum Elder. Both men have been away on international duty with Northern Ireland and Australia respectively, but McCann says they have returned unscathed.

“Josh and Callum have come back in today,” McCann added.

“Callum has been halfway around the world. His first game was in Australia and the second was in Dubai, so it’s nice to see him back. He’s a little bit jetlagged and tired but he’s fine. He was out on the grass today (Thursday) and will be good for Saturday.

“Josh had two very good games for Northern Ireland. I thought he was excellent in both games. It’s nice to see both him and Callum come back into the fold.”

McCann also provided an update on midfielder Tom Huddlestone, who has been missing since mid-October with a hamstring injury.

“He trained today for the first time on the grass with the team,” McCann said.

“He’s been working hard with the conditioning coaches. It’s a day by day thing with Tom - just seeing how he feels and where he’s at both physically and mentally. We’re not putting any timescale on when he’s going to return, but it’s nice to see him back out on the grass.”
