The Best Moment Of My Career - McCann

10 May 2021

Grant McCann has described lifting the Sky Bet League One title as the best moment of his career.

McCann and his players celebrated a fine season’s work by lifting the trophy after the final game of the season at Charlton Athletic on Sunday and Head Coach McCann says it was the perfect way to round off a memorable season.

“Seeing the black and amber ribbons on the trophy and being able to pick it up and lift it was a moment that will stay in the memory for everybody involved,” said McCann.

“It was a really special moment and the best moment of my career by a long way. It felt good to be lifting the trophy, but the bigger picture is all of the hard work that has gone into this. The togetherness of this team, the attitude, the desire to get the job done. It’s an amazing achievement for everyone. It’s the first time in 55 years that this club has picked up a trophy like this and I couldn’t be any happier right now.

“It has been tough all season. Game after game, week after week – it’s been a long, long season even though it has been condensed in terms of the time. However, it has been so enjoyable to come into work every day with this group of players and staff, and to lift that trophy with black and amber ribbons on it was special and something that will live with me forever.

“It was just a shame again that there were no fans inside the ground to see it, but I just can’t wait for next season now because this is a special group of players and it’s going to be a long seven or eight weeks without them.”

Sadly, the Tigers couldn’t end the season with a win that would have taken them to a club record points haul as a second half own goal from Jacob Greaves saw their 14-match unbeaten run come to an end, although McCann wasn’t allowing that to put a dampener on the day.

“I thought we were excellent in the first half but just didn’t take our chances, and then in the second half maybe being in the moment for the last couple of weeks has caught up with us a little bit,” continued McCann.

“But, to a man, they’ve been outstanding all season and we can let out hair down a little bit now and enjoy what has been a monumental effort from everybody.

“Yesterday was never about the game really, although of course we wanted to win to break the club record in terms of points. It was more about the season as a whole and it has been a tremendous one. I’m delighted for everybody."
