Hull City U18s suffered defeat in their latest Professional Development League fixture, losing 3-0 away against Sheffield Wednesday. An Alex Bonnington hat-trick condemned the Tigers to defeat at the Middlewood Road Training Centre.
John Anderson and Matt Hare made five changes to the starting XI that defeated Cardiff City 2-1 last time out. Josh Ward, Harry Lovick, Billy Leach, Sam Deacon and Harvey Carew all came into the team for Jake Leake, Louis Beckett, Rio Dyer, McCauley Power and Will Jarvis respectively.
The hosts opened the scoring in the third minute as Bonnington converted Charlie Curtis’ low cross at the back post. Sheffield Wednesday searched for a second as Jay Glover fired over from close range, before Basile Zottos hit the crossbar with his first-time effort.
The Tigers tried to respond through Oliver Green as his whipped free-kick delivery needed the glove of Alex Hare to push it away, before Sheffield Wednesday doubled their lead. After a great save by Harry Fisk denied Will Trueman, Bonnington was quickest to react to fire in the rebound.
In the second half, Fisk produced a stunning save to push away Bonnington’s effort, while Leach was very close to connecting with Glen Sani’s cross for the Tigers on the hour mark.
The Tigers pushed for a goal as Sani saw his header cleared off the line by Luke Yates, before substitute McCauley Power couldn’t divert Ward’s cross goalwards as Hare gathered.
The Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper was in inspired form as he produced a good double save to deny Green and Henry Curtis in quick succession. Green’s curling effort was initially parried by Hare, before he saved again to deny Curtis’ rebound from close range.
In the other goal, Fisk produced two good saves to deny Filimon Asfha and Zottos, before at the other end, Leach fired his effort over the bar after he connected with Ward’s low cross.
The hosts scored their third goal in injury time as Bonnington volleyed an effort past Fisk to secure his hat-trick as the Tigers suffered defeat.
