McCann: Honeyman Is A Born Winner

13 March 2021

Grant McCann has heaped praise on “born winner” George Honeyman for his “phenomenal” work-rate and leadership qualities.

The consistent 26-year-old shone once again in the 3-1 win over Peterborough, providing the assist for Reece Burke’s equalising goal and winning the penalty for Mallik Wilks to score the third.

The energetic midfielder tops the League One assists charts with 12 and also leads the way when it comes to tackles with 107.

“He’s a winner,” said McCann. “He’s a total born winner.

“For him to have the assists he has, for him to have the recoveries, I think he’s the best in the division.

“Him and Doc are right up there for recoveries, in terms of winning the ball back for the team.

“He’s just been phenomenal in terms of the energy he puts into games.

“Honeyman and Docherty are constant 12.5km a game. It’s phenomenal, the amount of effort they put in.

“George is driving the group, off the pitch, on the pitch. He’s been a captain at Sunderland, he knows what it’s about this division.

“He’s a great character.”
