Hull City Under-23’s secured a point in their latest Professional Development League fixture, after a goalless draw against Barnsley. David Robson saved a first-half penalty as the points were shared at the LNER Community Stadium.
Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson made eight changes to the starting XI that were defeated 3-0 against Birmingham City last time out. Robson replaced Harvey Cartwright in-between the sticks, while first-team members Jordan Flores and Thomas Mayer started respectively.
The Tigers had the first opportunity of the game as Jake Leake was picked out by Mayer’s cross-field pass, but the fullback’s low cross was gathered well by Corey Addai. In the other goal, Robson was sharp off his line to deny Steven Simpson one-on-one, before the Barnsley winger fired the rebound wide.
Cameron Thompson then tested Robson from range while Tomas Kalinauskus fired a low shot narrowly wide for the visitors. At the other end, Louis Beckett forced Addai into a decent save from his goal bound cross, before Josh Hinds placed an effort narrowly wide past the post.
Barnsley then received a penalty just before the half-time interval. Ali Omar was adjudged to have been brought down in the penalty area and the visitors received the spot-kick. Thompson stepped up to take it, but Robson guessed the right way to keep the scoreline goalless.
In the second half, Jordan Helliwell volleyed an effort wide, before his fellow fullback Charlie Winfield clipped the crossbar with a whipped free-kick.
The Tigers started to push for a winner with 20 minutes left to play as McCauley Snelgrove just couldn’t properly connect with James Berry’s cross, before the two linked up again moments later as Berry fired his first-timed shot over the bar.
Berry then curled another attempt narrowly wide for the Tigers, before Robson produced another stunning save in injury time to deny Omar from close-range.
