Honeyman's Only Interest Is In Helping The Team

11 March 2021

He leads the way when it comes to setting up team-mates for goals in Sky Bet League One, but George Honeyman insists that he takes little notice of personal statistics.

Honeyman tops the divisional assists chart with 12 so far this season, the most recent of which came on Tuesday night when he provided the set-piece delivery for Reece Burke to head in the Tigers’ first goal during the win at Peterborough United, and although aware of that stat he says his only interest is in doing a job for the team.

“I don’t seek out the stats but people do tell you things,” said Honeyman.

“It’s nice to know stuff like that but the only statistic that I’m really bothered about is the three points after each game. I’ll do whatever it takes to help us win and if that’s setting up goals then great.”

Honeyman’s place at the top of that particular chart highlights the kind of form the midfielder has been in this season and, as a key player in the changing room, he is keen to set a good example.

“I feel really good,” he added.

“There’s no real secret to it, I think it just comes from the amount of games that you play and what you do in the off-season to look after yourself. I’ve always been relatively fit and I just want to try and set an example in every game and keep pushing us in the right direction. The quality will keep coming from the team and will keep producing the wins for us I’m sure.”

The 3-1 midweek success at Peterborough was the Tigers’ fourth successive win and Honeyman feels the benefits of a calm and composed approach are being seen.

“I think we’re assessing situations much better and just focussing on one game at a time,” Honeyman explained.

“It all starts with the work that we do on the training ground in terms of our shape and the defensive side of things because we know the qualities that we have in the squad. It’s given us a good base and it shows with the amount of clean sheets that we’ve had, and I feel that is where the recent success has been built from.

“We’re just looking at it one game at a time, working out each opponent and looking at what we need to do for that game. We know the quality that we have and what we can produce on the day, so we’ll just keep taking it one game at a time."
