Focus Remains On Ourselves - Eaves

29 March 2021

Tom Eaves says it’s important that Hull City continue to only focus on themselves as the race for promotion from Sky Bet League One continues apace.

Eaves scored his first goal since December to put the Tigers 1-0 up against Gillingham on Saturday, but the Gills responded after the break to leave the score at 1-1 as Grant McCann’s side saw their lead at the top of the table cut to just one point.

“I think it’s important that we don’t focus on the teams around us,” said Eaves.

“We can only control our own performances so it’s just important that we concentrate on our next game. We’ve drawn this weekend but I felt our performance was actually good and we had some really good spells in the game. We moved the ball around really well, but when the game went ugly for spells it was ugly.

“I thought we defended really well in the game, other than the one ball into the box that they scored from. There was a bombardment of balls coming in and it felt never-ending at times. They flooded the box with a lot of crosses and long throws, and we knew that was what it was going to be like. For the majority of the game we dealt with that but they managed to capitalise on the one ball that we didn’t deal with.

“We had quite a few chances to bury the game at 1-0. A second goal is always really important but we couldn’t seem to find it.”

For Eaves, Saturday marked a first start since January in what has been a frustrating season for him on the injury front, so he was pleased to be back in and back on the scoresheet.

“It felt great to start, but it’s not about Tom Eaves playing every week it’s about Hull City getting back to the Championship. That’s the task in hand and whatever we have to do to make that happen as a group we will do. There’s a massive togetherness and unity here and we’re all pushing together towards that one common goal.

“I thought I did well at times. I felt I held the ball up well in the first half and got my goal as well. I was unfortunate not to get another one with a shot against the post and then the keeper made a good save from me in the second half. It was just nice to start a game."
