Burke: Focus On Ourselves

2 March 2021

Centre-back Reece Burke is not paying attention to the form of other teams, insisting Hull City must focus only on themselves.

The 24-year-old scored his fourth goal of the season in the emphatic 3-0 win at AFC Wimbledon, a result which moved the Tigers to within a point of second-placed Lincoln.

The Imps do have two games in hand but were beaten 4-3 by Plymouth at the weekend, while the three teams immediately below Hull City – Portsmouth, Sunderland and Doncaster – also dropped points.

But Burke isn’t thinking about what happens elsewhere and says his side must concentrate solely on taking care of their own business.

“I don’t look at the table,” said Burke.

“I just like to focus game by game. Some players might be different but I like to focus game by game and trying to get the job done.

“Whether teams have got games in hand, whether they’ve won, lost or drawn, we’ve just got to focus on ourselves.

“That’s where sometimes you could maybe go wrong, by focusing on other people and not concentrating on yourself.

“It’s important we just focus on ourselves.”

All attention this week is on back-to-back home games against two teams fighting to avoid the drop – Bristol Rovers on Saturday but firstly Rochdale this evening.

Despite scoring more away goals than anyone else in the country – 37 in 17 games – the Tigers have failed to score in their last three home matches.

But Burke is hopeful the Tigers can put their recent home struggles behind them.

“Some games, maybe we could be a bit more ruthless in front of goal," he said.

“We create chances and sometimes, with the goals we’ve conceded, we switch off. We can’t afford to do that.

“Hopefully we start to get a little run going at home and it’s a good opportunity for us after winning on Saturday. We want to keep pushing on.

“We know the games come thick and fast which is good for us and hopefully we get a result on Tuesday night now.”
